I am a Fourth Year PhD student at Yale University looking to tutor High School and College, Chemistry and Biology students.
I received my B.S. in Biochemistry in 2003 from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA and then worked at UMass Medical School as a research technician for one year before starting my PhD studies at Yale University.
I have always enjoyed helping others learn, and I have had the privilege of teaching some of the brightest people while being a Teaching Assistant at Yale, where I was nominated for the 2006 Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry Excellence in Teaching award.
I was a tutor in high school as part of the National Honor Society service requirement. My most rewarding moment came while a junior in college, tutoring a nearly failing high school chemistry student, who after three sessions of a couple hours was able to pull a C on his final. The improvement and understanding of the 1 on 1 work that he made was astounding to me.
When tutoring I focus on trying identify what the student is lacking in understanding or details missing in key concepts, and then work to develop those in a productive manner.
I don't believe in 1 on 1 lecturing, students receive enough lecture in the classroom. I focus on self searching and critical thinking to make it seem as if the student was already aware of things and just needed some guidance in putting things together; a more hands on approach to learning, not rote memorization which need only be done on their own.
My thesis work involves mainly computer work, so when I am not training on my bike, I am generally at a computer. On-Line help is available all the time.
Weekend in person help is available throughout most of CT and Worcester County, MA.
